The primary role of ISMA, the Istituto di Scienze Militari Aeronautiche (Institute of Military Aeronautical Sciences) is to provide Air Force officers with military education in the broadest sense of the term: from much of directives and / or managerial skills and the development of human resources, to the development of Air-Space Power doctrinal initiatives, involving research and development organizations at national and international level; experiential and distance (e-learning) through innovative teaching methods, to high value formative processes aimed at increasing the skills in the field of Leadership and Management.

The Institute has occupied its picturesque location in Cascine Park in Florence for almost 80 years and as a result also plays a part as an Armed Forces center for culture and thought. It hosts both national and international aeronautical and military congresses and seminars, as well as conferences and study groups. ISMA’s logistical and technological potential are recognized and respected even at joint force and industrial levels such that it hosts NATO, EU and civil symposia, round tables, meetings and committees.
